When you escape to a cozy cabin nestled in nature, nothing beats the satisfaction of cooking a delicious meal with fresh, local ingredients. It's like a treasure hunt for adults. A homemade burger is the perfect easy choice for a hearty, flavorful dinner that brings everyone together. Using ingredients sourced from the nearby town not only supports local farmers and producers but also enhances the taste and quality of your meal. This guide will walk you through crafting the ultimate homemade burger using the best local ingredients from Fairplay and Alma, turning your cabin getaway into a memorable culinary experience.

Choosing the Best Local Ingredients
The foundation of any great burger is quality ingredients. When you shop locally, you get fresher produce and meats that have traveled shorter distances, preserving their natural flavors.
Local Beef
Visit the nearby Eagle Rock Ranch Mercantile in Fairplay to find premium ground beef from local cattle. They have been rasing beef there for over 100years.
Fresh Buns from the old school General Store.
A burger is only as good as its bun, and this bun is it. Stocked in Al-Mart General Store Brioche buns from Steamboat Springs with clean ingredients adds a touch of sweetness and crisp thats unforgettable without going soggy. Go early in the morning to make sure you get them as they sell out. You can't miss them they are front an center as you enter the door.
Seasonal Vegetables and Greens
Use fresh lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and pickles from local farms. Seasonal vegetables like grilled zucchini or roasted peppers can add unique flavors. This is only available in the summer months with Kiki's Produce stand so cute and lots of flavor.
Local Cheese
Dairy's are hard to come by at elevation but Prather's Market in Fairplay has a great selection of cheese some from CO producers.
Homemade Sauces
Consider making your own sauces! We did a garlic parmesan aioli for this particular burger it was super good.
Ingredients List:
Ground meat of choice
Burger buns of choice
seasonings of choice, salt, garlic, pepper, etc.
ingredients to make aioli or store bought mayo
grated parmesan
6 garlic cloves
1 large sweet onion
5 tbsp of flour of choice
desired toppings and condiments for burgers
Preparing the Perfect Burger
Season your meat & Form the Patties : We used Baja Gold's "Baja BBQ". Handle the meat lightly to avoid compacting it too much. Shape patties about ¾ inch thick and slightly larger than your buns, as they will shrink when cooked.
Make the Crispy Onions: Slice onion in half from top to bottom. Lay on the flat side then cut thin half rings of each onion half. Spread out the "rings" so they are indiviual. Season to taste, we used Baja Golds "Garlic Pepper". Then cover lightly with any flour. Sauté in oil of choice or butter until desired crispiness.
Make the Aioli: Sauté garlic and add to homemade aioli or store bough mayo of choice. Season to taste and add grated parmesan. You can whizz it in a blender or chop finely by hand.
Prep the Toppings and Slice your Buns: We did the traditional toppings with some left over bacon from breakfast.
Cook your Burgers: BBQ your burgers to desired temperature and don't forget to toast the buns!
Assemble and Enjoy! Don't forget the crispy onions though. I eat them like potato chips!
